Weight-loss series: how to avoid weight gain during holidays

Disclaimer: This post is not a holiday fun buster,i promise!

Obviously holiday is the time to unwind & enjoy and break the rules, but when you are on a fitness journey and have been putting in efforts and it's all going well and suddenly a holiday comes up and the million dollar question arises how to not get carried away when you're going to be surrounded with treats and exotic food for a couple of weeks!
I recently came back from a holiday and fortunately/surprisingly didn't gain, though i ate out every single day and attended two weddings and uncountable dinners/lunch get togethers. Here's how

Planning while packing
Pack a box with your healthy stuff e.g homemade granola in ziplock bag (here is the link to my quick & easy homemade granola recipe), nuts and seeds trail mix in ziplock, stevia, quinoa, brown rice cakes, quick oats.It will come handy later.

Start the day with a good breakfast
Because this is the only meal on which you'll have complete control. So it's a smart idea to eat healthy calories in the morning. It will keep you full so less temptations and maintain sugar level/energy level for the rest of the day.

Plate method

No matter if you're eating at home or at a buffet always use the plate method i.e 50% salads/veggies,25% protein(chicken/fish), 25% carbs(rice/roti)
Trust me with this rule the portion size never gets messed up.Never deprive yourself.Always eat everything in moderation.

Swap that soda
I have totally eliminated soda drinks from my life.It has been years now and i am so glad and proud that i took this decision.Because it's not going to do any good to anybody's health anyway.
If i feel like having a cold beverage i occasionally order peach ice tea at cafes or steak houses.Otherwise sugar free elaichi tea/ coffee.

Share that dessert
Reminder: Never deprive yourself. If you crave something just eat it chocolate cake, ice cream anything! My trick is that i always share my dessert so that i satisfy my craving and don't eat too much at the same time!

Snack smart
It's best to enjoy the local seasonal fresh fruits wherever you go.

Stay extra active
This is bound to happen which is good for the goal.I didn't workout once but i was very active throughout so burnt everything i was eating here and there.

What to order?
As i said if i crave something i just eat it but if i am not really craving anything then i usually order steak or grilled fish with extra veggies on the side( no rice or fries or mashed potato), or anything from BBQ section with salad, or chaat/ gol gappay is a favourite so instead of burger fries i go for mixed chaat.

De-Stress
Do anything & everything you don't get to do in routine days.Sign up for that baking or photography workshop you always wanted to do, go meet your friends,do a movie night with your favorite girls, spend quality time with family, plan a spa day with your best friend, play with kids, paint with kids!
Because it's not just about the food, human body is dominated by it's mind. When the mind is happy and healthy everything falls into place.

peace out✌

Mutabbal/ Baba Ganoush

Mutabbal / Baba Ganoush is an arabic appetizer dip made with smoked aubergine, served with pita bread. Both are similar, principal difference is tahini sauce, mutabbal involves only smoked aubergine mixed with tahini sauce, olive oil, yogurt, garnished with  sumac powder whereas baba ganoush includes chopped ingredients,salsa-like,garnished with pomegranate. NO tahini. Here i've made a mix of both.Enjoy people! Dry roast eggplant on a pan until it gets mushy inside and skin gets burnt Finely chop onion, tomato, garlic, spring onions Remove skin Mash with a fork Mix in the chopped ingredients Season with salt, paprika, lemon juice .add tahini sauce, yogurt Garnish with parsley and olives Drizzle olive oil

Weight-loss series: Factors other than Food& Exercise

SLEEP Sleep deprivation can sabotage weight loss. How? Circadian rhythm .It is a biological internal 24hr clock that has a control center in the hypothalamus part of brain and it regulates sleep-wake cycles, hunger timings, heart rates, hormones and enzyme secretions. If the sleep timings are not according to the circadian rhythm ,the metabolism will not function properly. STRESS Stress is directly linked to hormone cortisol which is an anabolic hormone. It directly stores fat and has indirect action through insulin,it raises insulin level which results in drop in blood sugar which leads to sugar cravings/hunger. *Meditation really works!! *Chamomile tea in afternoon or at bed time is a good stress buster. HORMONES Medical conditions like hypothyroidism (lack of thyroxin ),polycystic ovarian syndrome( insulin resistance),cushing syndrome( cortisol excess) ,diabetes mellitus( insulin deficiency/resistance),excess estrogen are obvious culprits for weight gain. Leptin is a hormo...

Weight-loss series: Finding Balance

I have listed down what to eat and what to ditch in a previous post  click here  to check it out.I have also pointed out some common mistakes and how to overcome click here  to check that. Today we'll chat about how to balance it all,how to make sure that we are eating enough, not too much, not too little, how to include all the macronutrients and how to incorporate micronutrients into everyday meals. CALORIE COUNTING In order to figure out how much is our daily recommended calorie requirement ,it is a good idea to use any google calorie calculator. Here  is a link to a good one that I use.It will inquire about your age, gender, height, weight, activity level, then it will calculate your BMI/BMR ( BMI under 18 is considered underweight, between 18-25 is normal, between 25-30 is overweight, above 30 is obese). This calculator will recommend you the amount of calorie/day, it will also calculate the daily recommended percentage of carbohydrate/fat/protein.
